3 Myths Surrounding Wind Damage to Roofs

There are several myths surrounding wind damage to roofs. While they may seem harmless at first, they could end up causing damage if they’re used as the basis for making key decisions involving your home.

Today, we debunk some of the most widespread misconceptions about roof wind damage below:

  1. Wind Damage Isn’t Always Visually Apparent

It’s easy to miss some of the subtle early warning signs of wind damage. However, to professional roofers, they tend to stick out. For instance, during inspections, roofing contractors should be able to easily spot shingles with creases on their surface (caused by wind uplift, which is a product of the wind-induced pressure differential between the front and back of a shingle). That’s why, as a general rule, it’s best to let professional contractors handle inspections and home improvement projects.

  1. Shingles With Failed Adhesion Seals and Wind-Damaged Shingles Mean the Same Thing

Wind uplift is the usual culprit behind failed shingle adhesion seals, but it’s just one of several possible causes, which include natural wear and tear, and installation errors.

  1. After a Storm, Your Roof Should Be Okay as Long There Aren’t Any Leaks

As mentioned earlier, it’s easy to miss the subtle warning signs of wind and storm damage. That’s why it’s highly recommended you have a roofing company conduct an inspection after a storm or extreme weather event. Remember: no matter how durable your roof is, it’s likely to have suffered some form of damage during a storm. And if minor storm or wind damage isn’t immediately fixed, the damage may affect other parts of your home, turning what should have been straightforward roof repairs into a more extensive – and expensive – overhaul of your exterior.

What about routine inspections? How often should your roof be inspected? In general, you should schedule a roof inspection at least twice a year.
