Asphalt Shingles: What Are the Different Types?

Asphalt shingles are the most widely used roofing option in the United States. Nearly 70% of all roofs in the country are made from this material. It is not only cost-effective, but also comes in a wide range of colors and styles.

Read on to learn the different types of asphalt shingles.

Three-Tab Shingles

Also called strip shingles, three-tab is the most basic type of asphalt shingles. They got their name from the cut of the shingles and are made from a single asphalt layer. When it was introduced in the 1980s, it became the most prevalent shingle roofing on the market.

It features an extremely flat look that resembles slate. Because it is a more lightweight option and uses less material, three-tab shingles often cost less than other shingle roofing options.

Architectural Shingles

Dimensional or architectural is currently today’s most popular type of asphalt shingles. They come in at least two layers of asphalt bonded together to create a thicker, multi-dimensional look. These shingles are designed to possess the appearance of wood shake and slate roofing. While they weigh more than strip shingles, they usually come with better warranty coverage.
