If you’re investing in a new roof this season, make sure it comes with a good underlayment. In fact, a roof may not even be considered complete without one. Fortunately, picking an underlayment for your new system isn’t as complicated as you may expect. Here are some handy tips.
The underlayment refers to the thin waterproof material installed between the roof deck and the asphalt shingles. It not only gives the roof material a stable foundation, but also serves as an additional barrier against water or moisture infiltration. The underlayment is available in three main types, and rubberized asphalt is considered the most premium of them. It’s primarily made of asphalt and rubber polymers, and is generally applied in the more leak-prone areas of your roof to keep them watertight. If you don’t mind its higher initial price, a rubberized asphalt underlayment can be a good option for your roof.
This type of underlayment has been around for decades. It used to be the go-to option before newer and better alternatives became available in the market. The waterproofing ability of asphalt-saturated underlayment pales significantly in comparison to its counterparts. But if you want something that’s cost-effective and readily available, then this should still be a viable option for you.
This underlayment option is costlier than asphalt-saturated, but is more reasonably priced than rubberized asphalt. Thanks to its mid-level status, synthetic underlayment remains an enduring favorite among many homeowners. Made of polypropylene or polyethylene, this option is tough, watertight and tear-resistant. Synthetic also promotes a secure walking surface and comes with clear delineated lines and overlap guides. These, along with its light weight, make this underlayment easier and faster to install. If there’s one underlayment option that most roofers will recommend, it will be synthetic.
