What Is a Good SHGC Rating for Your New Windows?

New windows can completely transform the look of your house. Another thing they can do is improve the comfort of your living space. That’s why when choosing replacement windows, you should consider energy efficiency ratings, such as solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC).

Keep reading to learn which SHGC rating is ideal for your new windows.

What Is Solar Heat Gain Coefficient?

When selecting materials for siding installation or replacement, you usually consider R-value. This rating measures a material’s ability to withstand heat flow. On the other hand, when choosing new windows for your home, you must consider SHGC ratings. The right windows can help your home stay cool in summer and warm in winter.

SHGC refers to how much solar radiation passes through a window, door or skylight. It is expressed as a number between 0 and 1. Units with lower SHGC ratings allow less heat from the sun and offer better shading capabilities. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean you should get windows with the lowest SHGC value.

What SHGC Rating Is Ideal for Your New Windows?

Your climate often determines the most suitable SHGC rating for your new windows. If you live in a colder location, you will benefit from windows with an SHGC between 0.30 and 0.60. Windows with higher SHGC can make it easier to keep your living space warm in winter.

Are you situated in a warmer climate? If so, look for replacement windows with an SHGC rating of 0.27 or less. Windows with a lower SHGC rating can help you save on energy costs by keeping outdoor heat from traveling to your indoor spaces.
